It's easy to toss the cynical line 'another year and another Julie London CD collection' around these days. However, this 2-CD 50-song US collection does place itself a top of the reissue heap, thanks to its large volume of material and liner notes. Plus, until some brave fool or fanboy officially puts out a complete Julie box set, this set is pretty much the "biggest" as you might as well get. You have to give credit for any singer who knows his or her own limitations and works with them and Julie fits very well in this category. Singing those sultry numbers doesn't mean hitting those high notes and throwing your voice across the stage like a slingshoting a dumpster truck. Maybe Celine Dion should takes notes here. The song selections covers your basic American song standards like I Left My Heart In San Francisco, You Made Me Love You and so on, interesting covers like Desafinado (Slightly Out Of Tune), Wives & Lovers and Light My Fire (the later from her last and semi-questionable LP Yummy, Yummy, Yummy 〈Reissue]) and the usual original titles that pretty much launched London's career (outside of those record covers) like Cry Me A River and My Heart Belongs To Daddy. Even though the packaging isn't as elaborate as those wonderful Ultra Lounge compilations, it does offer very good liner notes and a very sexy cover of the divine Ms. London. The only bad notes here are pretty much minor and admittedly personal: the flute arrangement in Misty is annoying and repetitive as hell and, at the end of the package, Capitol Records puts a double guilt trip on you. After a short paragraph about copying can lead to a certain amount of lawlessness and bankruptcy for the artist (even though Ms. London passed away in 2000), the label adds one more line...a web site address for Make Hunger History. Like any compilation discussion, everyone has got their own personal 'Best Of' and might scoff on this set. So until that day when a 'Box Of Julie' comes into light (along side a big ass picture book of the complete album covers), this large set just might have to do.
